Living my childhood dream of building family with friends, mothering in a collective and honoring women and children first.

Living the modern day matriarchy

I'm living the modern day matriarchy in New York City. My best friend, her daughter, my two sons, and I chose to live as one family. We call ourselves the Mommune (and the kidsune).

This lifestyle didn't happen by accident. I studied matriarchal societies and human rights in college and I’m a history teacher by trade. I believe that the familial structures we inherit aren't the only structures possible. In fact, for most of history, people organized in collective villages. Our modern matriarchy is built on these ideas which naturally evolved as I became a mother.

Modern matriarchies are possible and we don’t need permission to form families in this way. Everyone benefits in a society that puts mothers and children first.
